Living Room Makeover

Pretty much ever since we moved into our new home, we've all kind of neglected the basement. Our girls didn't really want to play down there since most of their toys were in the main level, and there wasn't a lot down there other than a few unwanted pieces of furniture. As a result, it was easy to avoid that part of our house. As the weeks & months passed by and we still didn't have a desire to spend time down there I began to concoct a plan to change that.
My main goal was to create an inviting, cozy & functional space that would allow for easy entertaining. After bringing the kiddos toys to the basement, I was left with the task of decorating the living space adjacent to their playroom.

Below is a picture of what our poor neglected living room looked like before the makeover.
Since our baby is a few days away from making her arrival, I knew I had to keep it budget friendly. So, I started by going through each room and seeing if there were any furniture & home decor pieces I could utilize to spruce up the downstairs living area. After grabbing a few key pieces, I knew I needed to get a few more things to tie it all together.

Since I got such great deals on our bedroom nightstands & wall decor a few weeks ago at Big Lots , I decided I would make that my first stop shop before heading anywhere else.
I did a quick search on their site beforehand, so I'd have a better idea of what I wanted. As with all stores, I know styles and assortment vary by store, but I was lucky enough to find all the accent pieces I was looking for on my first trip {thanks to some very helpful employees}. They also had some darling drapes I wanted to buy, but I resisted the urge since I already had some at home that just needed a bit of hemming.

Once I came home it was time to work on a wood pallet DIY project that would cover up the huge eye-sore that is our electrical box {which hangs above the couch}. It's been a bit of a challenge to cover up because it's almost four feet tall & off-centered from our sectional.

But, since we've been collecting wood for the last few months, I decided this would be the perfect project to utilize it on. The hubby & I quickly got to work on it & whipped it out in a few short hours{DIY tutorial coming soon}. Originally I was going to put a few framed pictures on it but, now that it's finished I can't make myself put anything over it{I just adore the colors}.
Here is the finished product.
And here is what the living room looks like with the decorative accent pillows, throw blanket, ottoman , drapes, side table, accessories & wall decor.
So, what do you think? Much improved, right?
Another great find from Big lots is this cute side table. It's really beautiful & helps to balance out the black coffee table in the room.

This poor ottoman, has been hopping from room to room for the last six months. Originally I got it for our upstairs living area, but it just didn't fit the room well enough. I'm glad, I've finally found a good place for it!
I love these darling decorative pillows, they pull all the colors of the room together perfectly!
And, doesn't this candle holder make the cutest vase? These little treasures are exactly why, I roam aimlessly through Big Lots for hours at a time:).
In case you were wondering, I got all of my accent pieces from Big Lots:).
