For many, finding the right energy gel to fuel their long runs is a common source of anxiety, especially leading up to a big race. I know that's been the case for me as I've been training for my first marathon.
In the past I have used GU to fuel my longs runs, but they are so thick, and really hard to swallow, especially if you don't have water (which Is usually the case). My biggest concern with those, and the reason for searching for a better alternative is that each time I take one, I'm nervous about how my stomach will accept it, and hoping that it won't give me G.I. distress (because that is the absolute worst feeling!).
That's why when I heard that their was an all-natural Chia energy gel alternative, I jumped at the opportunity to try it! Huma makes their gels using ground-up chia seeds, which helps by providing the body with all 9 essential amino acids and giving you a steady release of energy(so you won't feel any sugar spikes).
These come in a wide variety of flavors and their newest gels even provide natural electrolytes, and my personal favorite for runs: caffeine!
This past weekend I finally had an opportunity to try out the Huma Chia energy gels you see below on my 10 mile run. And they did not disappoint!
While I did plan to use all three of my gels, I only ended up needing two of them (I used the Strawberry first at mile 6 and then the Strawberry lemonade at mile 9).
They were really tasty! They tasted very sweet (like real fruit, not the icky artificial stuff), which made me very alert and kept my energy levels nice and even throughout the remainder of my run. But I'll be honest, I did crave more of the energy gels as soon as I finished, they were that good. They weren't as thick as I was expecting, so they were very easy to swallow, and didn't give me a heavy feeling afterwards, which I really appreciated.
All in all I really liked them, and will definitely continue to use these as I train for my race!
